You should bring a bathing suit, towel, goggles are recommended and a re-usable swim diaper is REQUIRED if your child is under the age of 3 (see below for details). If you are in Parent & Tot class, don’t forget your suit too! Swim caps are also highly recommended especially for students with long hair. Goggles, swim caps and re-usable swim diapers are available for purchase at the pool! Let us know if you forget something - we probably have a spare that you can borrow!
Of course! We will pro-rate your fees and charge you only for the lessons remaining. Start swimming today!
You may cancel your enrollment up to 24 hours prior to your first day of lessons for a full refund. Cancellations during the session will be charged for lessons taken; there is no cancellation fee. The remaining balance is prorated and returned to you as a computer credit toward future lessons. When you are ready to re-register the credit on your file will be deducted off the total cost for the program you are registering for. Still have a question about canceling? Please speak to one of our managers - we are more than happy to work with you and your situation.
We know families are busy. You are running from soccer to hockey to dance class and you have a lot of schedules to juggle! If you need to change your swim time we are happy to accommodate your needs if we have space available in your child’s level at another time. Come and talk to one of our friendly staff at the front desk and they will be happy to provide you with whatever options there are.
As an added service we provide make up classes for medical reasons or family emergencies. This policy only applies if there is space in our schedules to accommodate your child’s level and the lesson must be taken within the same session that the class was missed.
At Making Waves our youngest students are just weeks old! Our Stage 1 Parent & Tot program is for infants up to 6 months old. There are 3 stages in our Parent & Tot Program for children up to 24 mths. Babies love our warm water pools! Ultimately, it is up to you as a parent to decide if you and your baby are ready! Classes without mom or dad in the water start when your child is 2 years of age.
The US Institutes of Health released a study in March 2009 that supports the positive impact learn to swim lessons can have on young children and drowning prevention. It states, “Providing very young children with swimming lessons appears to have a protective effect against drowning and does not increase childrens risk of drowning.” Introducing your infant to swimming lessons at an early age does not encourage them to be overly bold and unsafe around water. The study concludes: Participating in formal swimming lessons was associated with an 88% reduction in the risk of drowning in children between the ages of 1 to 4. Crying children are a very normal part of swimming lessons. We see it all the time with beginners, so don’t feel like you’re the only one! At Making Waves our Head Instructors, identified on deck by the red shirt they wear, are there to assist with the classes and ensure consistency in our programming. If a child is crying, the head instructor will help out with the class and give your child the one-on-one attention they need to overcome their fear. In some situations where your child really can’t stop crying to get your attention we’ll let you know it’s time for you to get out of sight. All of our facilities have a place for you to watch but not be seen. Don’t worry they will settle in and you’ll be able to cheer them on from the side of the pool soon! Be ready with a towel and a big hug after the lesson.
A saltwater pool is gentler on the skin, so it is particularly better for those who have sensitive skin or are prone to skin irritations such as eczema. It is a common misconception that saltwater pools do not have any chlorine in them - in fact they do. While saltwater pools do not use any significant chemicals, chlorine is a byproduct of the salt you add to the water, so chlorine is still present in the water. At Making Waves we have both chlorinated and saltwater facilities that are all maintained at a low chlorine level for the comfort and enjoyment of all our staff and students.
We would love to be able to give you exactly what you want all the time! We pride ourselves on awesome customer service. That said, the majority of our amazing instructors have schedules that change every few months or so. You can always request a particular instructor and we will try our best to accommodate you but there are no guarantees. Don’t worry! All of our instructors teach the same skills, just with their own personal flair!
We love cameras! Please feel free anytime to come out on deck and take pictures of your little fish! If you get a great picture or video share it with us on Facebook!
No Shoes – No Problem! For everyone’s health and safety there are no outdoor shoes permitted in our changeroom areas or on the pool deck. You are welcome to bring flip flops! Strollers are permitted in the viewing area and changeroom if necessary but we ask that you not bring your stroller onto the pool deck.
Cloth, reusable swim diapers with a good fit around the legs and waist are REQUIRED for all students under the age of 3, even those who are potty-trained. Please help us prevent a pool fouling which causes a temporary pool closure. You can purchase a cloth reusable diaper at our front desk!
Our big glass wall is not a barrier - It is here to allow you to watch your children in a comfortable environment while they swim in a warm one! We encourage you to sit on the benches or chairs provided on the pool deck. If you have a question or a comment please feel free to speak to your Head Instructor.
We’re in Canada eh! Come rain or come snow we are probably open. For those of you who may question “Are they open?” please check our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter for any immediate update and instructions. We follow the lead of the local Parks and Recreation Department on this one. If they are open then we are too - and they are rarely closed!
