Here are some helpful answers from our family to yours.

Are you new to Making Waves? Is it your child’s first lesson? Even if you have been ‘making waves’ with us for a while you may still have a question. So here are our answers! Did we miss something? Please let us know and we’ll put our heads together and get back to you.

What do I need to bring to swimming lessons?

You should bring a bathing suit, towel, goggles are recommended and a re-usable swim diaper is REQUIRED if your child is under the age of 3 (see below for details). If you are in Parent & Tot class, don’t forget your suit too! Swim caps are also highly recommended especially for students with long hair. Goggles, swim caps and re-usable swim diapers are available for purchase at the pool! Let us know if you forget something - we probably have a spare that you can borrow!

Can I enroll after a swim session has started?

Of course! We will pro-rate your fees and charge you only for the lessons remaining. Start swimming today!

What is your cancellation policy?

You may cancel your enrollment up to 24 hours prior to your first day of lessons for a full refund. Cancellations during the session will be charged for lessons taken; there is no cancellation fee. The remaining balance is prorated and returned to you as a computer credit toward future lessons. When you are ready to re-register the credit on your file will be deducted off the total cost for the program you are registering for. Still have a question about canceling? Please speak to one of our managers - we are more than happy to work with you and your situation.

Can I change my swim schedule after lessons have started?

We know families are busy. You are running from soccer to hockey to dance class and you have a lot of schedules to juggle! If you need to change your swim time we are happy to accommodate your needs if we have space available in your child’s level at another time. Come and talk to one of our friendly staff at the front desk and they will be happy to provide you with whatever options there are.

What happens if my child misses a class?

As an added service we provide make up classes for medical reasons or family emergencies.  This policy only applies if there is space in our schedules to accommodate your child's level and the lesson must be taken within the same session that the class was missed.  No monetary funds will be available for missed classes.  Registrants are allowed a maximum of 2 make-ups per session.

When is the best time for my child to start swimming lessons?

At Making Waves our youngest students are just weeks old! Our Parent and Tot Program accommodates all children up to 24 months. Babies love our warm water pools! Ultimately, it is up to you as a parent to decide if you and your baby are ready! Classes without mom or dad in the water start when your child is 2 years of age.

The US Institutes of Health released a study in March 2009 that supports the positive impact learn to swim lessons can have on young children and drowning prevention. It states, “Providing very young children with swimming lessons appears to have a protective effect against drowning and does not increase children's risk of drowning.” Introducing your infant to swimming lessons at an early age does not encourage them to be overly bold and unsafe around water. The study concludes: Participating in formal swimming lessons was associated with an 88% reduction in the risk of drowning in children between the ages of 1 to 4. What if my child is crying?

Crying children are a very normal part of swimming lessons. We see it all the time with beginners, so don’t feel like you’re the only one! At Making Waves our Head Instructors, identified on deck by the red shirt they wear, are there to assist with the classes and ensure consistency in our programming. If a child is crying, the head instructor will help out with the class and give your child the one-on-one attention they need to overcome their fear. In some situations where your child really can’t stop crying to get your attention we’ll let you know it’s time for you to get out of sight. All of our facilities have a place for you to watch but not be seen. Don’t worry they will settle in and you’ll be able to cheer them on from the side of the pool soon! Be ready with a towel and a big hug after the lesson.

Can my child always have the same instructor?

We would love to be able to give you exactly what you want all the time! We pride ourselves on awesome customer service. That said, the majority of our amazing instructors have schedules that change every few months or so. You can always request a particular instructor and we will try our best to accommodate you but there are no guarantees. Don’t worry! All of our instructors teach the same skills, just with their own personal flair!

Can I take pictures of my child during swimming lessons?

We love cameras! Please feel free anytime to come out on deck and take pictures of your little fish! If you get a great picture or video share it with us on Facebook!

Why can’t I wear my shoes on the pool deck?

No Shoes – No Problem!  For everyone’s health and safety there are no outdoor shoes permitted in our change room areas or on the pool deck. You are welcome to bring flip flops! Strollers are permitted in the viewing area but we ask that you not bring your stroller into the change rooms or onto the pool deck.

Does my child need to wear a swim diaper?

Cloth, reusable swim diapers with a good fit around the legs and waist are REQUIRED for all students under the age of 3, even those who are potty-trained. Please help us prevent a pool fouling which causes a temporary pool closure. You can purchase a cloth reusable diaper at our front desk!

Can I sit on the pool deck to watch?

Our big glass wall is not a barrier - It is here to allow you to watch your children in a comfortable environment while they swim in a warm one! We encourage you to sit on the benches or chairs provided on the pool deck. If you have a question or a comment please feel free to speak to your Head Instructor.

Do you cancel lessons due to bad weather?

We’re in Canada eh! Come rain or come snow we are probably open. For those of you who may question “Are they open?” please check our Facebook page for any immediate update and instructions. We follow the lead of the local Parks and Recreation Department on this one. If they are open then we are too - and they are rarely closed!

Are swimming lessons eligible for any tax credits?

Yes! Your child’s swimming lessons are eligible for tax credits from both the Federal and Provincial government! Hang on to your Making Waves receipt and check out these links for more information:
Ontario Children’s Activity Tax Credit
Canadian Children’s Fitness Tax Credit

Why do your programs cost what they do?

You may be curious to know why our program cost a little bit more than some other programs you have seen.  At Making Waves, you get a lot of bang for your buck!  Just a few of the costs associated with running a top quality program include:  warm water pools that take a lot of energy to heat and are key to your child's progress and enjoyment; highly and frequently trained, well-treated and competitively paid staff...happy staff = happy swmmers; cutting edge water sanitation methods; MWSS swimmers progress more quickly than other swimmers' this means your child's lessons will actually cost you less in the long run!  What is your time worth?  Give us a call!  We would love to tell you all about the making Waves differences!
