History of MWSS

Who made the first wave?

Making Waves’ founder Tiernan Murphy started Making Waves Swim School in the summer of 1994, running swimming lessons for local children out of his parent’s backyard pool in Brampton during summers off from the University of Guelph.

In the Fall of 1999, Making Waves offered its first indoor swimming session out of the Regency Fitness and Racquets Club pool in east Brampton. Then, in August 2006, the company expanded to the Town of Milton where they were fortunate to be able to purchase the former Carole Murray’s Swim Academy. As Milton has grown, so too has the swim school which now teaches over 1,400 children per week. The Milton location changed its name in November 2010, to officially join the Making Waves family of pools.

In March 2010, Making Waves Swim School expanded yet again with the opening of their new purpose-built West Brampton facility. The two-million-dollar Rosedale Avenue location provides a state-of-the-art 25-metre, warm, salt water pool, in an 8,000-square-foot building which was custom designed for the needs of the swim school. It is a facility that allows the school to surpass the expectations of its clients, the extensive viewing windows allowing parents to see their child’s progress with each swim class.

Currently Making Waves is employing well over 100 talented and energetic staff members dedicated to teaching children and adults to swim. Co-owners Stephanie and Tiernan Murphy, with their team of outstanding staff, have been determined to prove that their school is unlike any other learn-to-swim program in the area.

The Making Waves culture is indeed distinct. It is a company mandate that it is best to hire the personality, than train the skill. Their hard working staff members have in common a positive outgoing attitude and a very keen interest in working with children.  Each and every staff member cares about the job that they are doing, and it shows in how children are encouraged to learn. Staff training is ongoing, with more than 10 training sessions per year provided to everyone, to ensure constant improvement to match the company’s goals of continuous innovation.

Communication, a joy of learning, and ready smiles are common within the tight knit Making Waves family. It makes all the difference in the world when a child steps into the pool happy and is willing to learn to swim.
